In order to walk a section of the Grand Rounds we don't typically see, we drove a Car2Go car to Northeast Minneapolis. I originally wanted our starting point to be Deming Heights Park but instead we started near the Johnson Street business district.
We walked along St. Anthony Parkway through Deming Heights Park and around the Columbia Park and Golf Course. A long stretch of the walk is industrial and we crossed a rail yard neither of us had ever noticed. We crossed the Mississippi River at 42nd Avenue on the Camden Bridge. We followed Victory Memorial Parkway until Lowry Avenue where we took a detour from the trails to get lunch at Lowry Cafe at Penn Avenue North. It's a great neighborhood cafe with a good craft beer selection and they serve breakfast until 3 PM daily.
We had a lot more energy after our break and we continued along the Grand Rounds which turned into Theodore Wirth Parkway. We crossed Bassett Creek, walked by Wirth Lake and Birch Pond. We ended our walk near Brownie Lake.
Originally I wanted to get home by walking but we were in an area that lacks gas stations or restaurants for a pitstop. I was starting to get irritable when Scott noticed a Car2Go car! We were going to drive to a place for a break but we ended up just driving all the way home.
It is a good thing we threw in the towel early because I ended up getting really sick. The temperature was around 70 degrees which felt amazing after our long, cold winter, however the sun beating down on us the whole time and not having enough water breaks didn't end well for me.
