My weekly walking partner, Lisa and I took advantage of the holiday to enjoy a bonus walk together. A fellow coffee lover, Lisa was enthusiastic to try the "cocktailish" iced coffee drinks featured in Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl’s Top 5 Iced Coffees:
This is the new coffee shop on this list and maybe the finest among the new wave of craft coffees. Five Watt is a shop that just wants you to enjoy your coffee whether it’s a basic cup of black, a VERY fancy drink laced with bitters (yes, bitters) or tips on how to brew yours at home. Recommended…go to their website (here) and browse their coffee drinks. It’s the equivalent of the very impressive cocktails at Marvel Bar or Prohibition. There’s the Orange Blossom Special (minus Johnny Cash) with Cocoa, Orange bitters, Espresso and Milk. Or the Hendricks with Cold press, Juniper + Basil simple syrup, Grapefruit bitters, Cream. This is some serious craft coffee!

The weather was perfect for our journey north on Garfield Avenue South, one of my favorite streets in the Kingfield neighborhood. The street is lined with homes of varying styles, many with elaborate front yard gardens, free little libraries, and sculptures.
At 38th Street we headed east and got our dose of Vitamin D for the day as the bright sun's rays beat down on us. Five Watt is at 38th and Nicollet Ave S, a business node with solid restaurants with Blackbird Cafe, Kiyatchi, and Cocina Latina. There is an empty space on the northeast corner but it looks like it may be under construction so I'll be watching for updates.
I felt welcomed by the baristas as soon as we entered Five Watt. I love the space - light and breezy for the summer yet I imagine it will be nice and cozy in the fall and winter. We ventured toward the back of the shop to check out their set up. They don't hide all of their equipment which resembles Scott's homebrew lab in the basement. It made me realize that Scott could duplicated this on a smaller scale for my home cold press brewing.
I know next to nothing about bitters. That may change now that I'm in love with Five Watt Coffee.
Count me in for Sunday Service. Coffee, oatmeal and music sounds like a winning combination.
I chose the Orange Bow Tie: cold press, cream, simple syrup, chocolate, and orange bitters. Lisa had the Purple Bow Tie: cold press, cream, simple syrup, hibiscus, pepper, and grapefruit bitters. Several drinks on their menu called my name so I will definitely be back.
