Bluff Street Park
One of the advantages to working at the University of Minnesota is its proximity to some great walking paths. My friend Erin and I do a loop that takes us around the western edge of campus. I have walked past the Bluff Street Park sign numerous times but stopped to snap a photo now that I'm visiting all of the Minneapolis parks. While it isn't listed as a park on the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board website, it is Park Board land and they recently granted permission for the Department of Transportation to complete Bluff Street Trail, a bike trail that connects downtown Minneapolis with the University of Minnesota. Windom has a presence in both Southwest (Windom neighborhdood) and Northeast Minneapolis (Windom Park neighborhood). We live near Windom and walked through Windom South Park on the way to Diamond Lake and Todd Park. It is a small playground near a school and by the looks of the Minneapolis neighborhood map, it is the only park in this neighborhood.
Minneapolis has many great lakes but I'm not sure I'd count Diamond Lake among them. One of the issues is the plans overhead so it isn't the most peaceful place in the city. The Diamond Lake Park page mentions birding as a strength for the park so perhaps I'll return with my favorite birder, Lisa and she can help me appreciate it.
Located in the Diamond Lake neighborhood, Todd Park is a huge space but it doesn't seem to attract many people. This is likely due to its proximity to Pearl Park. The webpage states its home to Picnic in the Park Festival, an event sponsored by the Hale-Page-Diamond Lake neighborhood association.
I enjoyed tonight's walk even though it led us to the same area as the night before. These walks have also helped me to remember how easy and enjoyable it is to access neighborhood east of I-35 when I use the Minnehaha Creek trail. This will be handy when I check out the Nokomis Farmers Market which is open three times this summer: Wednesdays 6/25, 7/23, and 8/27 from 4 - 8pm.
