Today is my mom's birthday and I wish I could have spent the day celebrating her in person. Instead, I just thought about her a lot and tried to figure out the best way to honor her on her special day. Cookies, a trip to Conny's Creamy Cone, and flowers all crossed my mind as possibilities. Fortunately, after having dinner in Dinkytown, my friend Allie wanted to stop at The Book House. Of course! Books! My mom is a voracious reader and she spends many hours in her favorite chairs turning the pages of interesting non-fiction books. Also related to her birthday, she has reminded us many times that the date of her birth is marred with bad luck. While it certainly is tragic, the only huge event that I find on record is in 1865 President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater. That so happens to be her favorite example, but she also thought the Titanic sank on her birthday. Close, but it was actually on the 15th of Apri! She would say, close enough!
I have nothing but positive associations with April 14 (sorry Abe) because I love my mom dearly and try to treat her like everyday is her birthday. I live more than four hours away from her, and wish I could meet up with her for iced tea or lunch on a whim. Instead, my sister and I have started a tradition of traveling from our respective homes to spend a week with her around her birthday.
Can't wait to see you soon mom!
I attempted my first 365 photo project in 2011. I made it to Day 246.
