Today is my little sister's birthday! Even though I am the older sister, it is Emily who has blazed trails for me. Including international travel. Besides a couple of trips to Canada (doesn't count when you're from the Upper Midwest), I had never been outside of the US until I visited Emily while she studied in Sweden. She introduced me to Princess Torte. Sponge cake layered with cream enveloped by a hug of marzipan.
A few years have passed since she first introduced me to this cake. We lived together for a couple of years, times I will never forget. She now lives many miles away from me and I miss her greatly. I look forward to our next adventure together- hopefully involving treats like this!
Here is the Wikipedia information on Princess torte:
A Prinsesstårta (Princess Cake) is a traditional Swedish cake consisting of alternating layers of airy sponge cake, whipped cream and thick pastry cream all topped with a 2-3 mm thick layer of marzipan. The marzipan overlay is normally green, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and often decorated with a pink marzipan rose. The original recipe first appeared in the 1930s "Prinsessornas Kokbok" cookbook, which was published by Jenny Åkerström, a teacher of the daughters of Prince Carl, Duke of Västergötland. The cake was originally called "Grön tårta" (green cake), but was given the name "prinsesstårta" or "princess cake" because the princesses were said to have been especially fond of the cake.

It was great fun to be included in my cousin, Erika's daughter's fifth birthday party. Avery is on the left in the photo and she had 7 friends over to her house for a whirlwind of fun. They started by making mini pizzas, listened to stories, ate ice cream cake, had balloon animals made, opened presents (it was a group activity) and ended the day with a scavenger hunt for treats that the guests took home. Erika and John did a fantastic job of keeping these active children entertained. I had to take a nap afterward and all I did was observe and press my finger on the shutter button.
Happy birthday Avery!

Today is my dad's birthday. To honor his special day, the picture of the day is Scrabble related. He loves the game and has been known to play for hours on end at his computer. He is quite competitive and my mom refuses to play against him. My sister and I are gluttons for punishment and play Words with Friends with him on our iPhones.
Most of the words used remind me of my dad or my dad's character. Of course I ran out of letters for some of the words I wanted to use and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't come up with appropriate descriptors for "z" and "q". I guess I needed his help!
I attempted my first 365 photo project in 2011. I made it to Day 246.
