A new year! I don't normally set new year's resolutions but I enjoy the momentum this time of year brings to work on areas of my life I'd like to improve so I'm going to set three goals.
I've settled on:
1. Move more
2. Eat more foods with color
3. Surround myself with beauty
After two weeks of little to no activity, my body is craving more movement. When I am sedentary, things go haywire: back pain, migraines, disrupted sleep, and general bitchiness to name a few side effects. I have a Fit Bit and I am recommitting to 10,000+ steps a day, rain (snow/ice) or shine. It's 6:30 PM and I have 6351 steps so I'm headed to the gym after dinner!
Eat colorful foods
I originally wrote eat smarter but that just seems so squishy. This time of year I struggle to eat foods that are nutrient rich like fresh fruit and vegetables. Hunger pangs lead me to snacky foods that do not satisfy me (crackers and dry cereal). I had a fresh spinach salad and mixed fruit yesterday and they both tasted so good. Now that I have written this down, I'm going to add a salad to the leftover pizza I've been looking forward to all day.
Surround myself with beauty
This goal is purposefully vague. I know I can change the actions I take to achieve this goal based on what's going on in my life. Right now, I'm focused on staying out of the depths of winter depression. I choose to live in Minnesota so I have only myself to blame. But man, It seriously sucks the life out of me.
Today I printed out the Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Winter Guide for ideas on how to take in the beauty of the city during the cold months. I want to try cross country skiing or snowshoeing this year.
Another thing I'm going to do for this goal is take a photo a day. In 2011, I did a 365 photo project and I liked that it gave me reason to seek out new things to capture using my iPhone or DSLR. I also like the challenge in finding beauty in the mundane when I have limited daylight hours for photo explorations.
In line with surrounding myself with beauty, I signed up for Apartment Therapy's "January Cure" because I found it helpful when I completed the homework in our old house. Today's assignment was to create a project list with 3-5 areas of focus for each room of our home.
